A beautiful piece of art enhances any space, but unless you’re a designer or curator, selecting the right art for your home can be a little overwhelming. It is common to obsess over every detail, but if you follow these tips, it’ll be much easier to find something that looks great and fits your style.

Buy What You Love

Although it’s normal to want to select pieces for your home that will impress guests, you and your family are the ones who will see your art daily. Buy pieces only that match your style and speak to your soul.

Color

Odds are your art will last longer than your furnishings, but consider their current colors and select art that complements them. When you replace your couch or bedding, take a photo of your art to make sure your replacement items are in the same or a neutral color palette. Also, consider buying black and white photographs. The look is chic and timeless, and goes with any color scheme.

Scale
Consider the space you have to fill compared to the size of the room and the furnishings. Even a masterpiece can look out of place depending where it’s displayed. Know your room size and measure the furnishings before making a purchase. Art should take up no more than two-thirds the size of the furnishings it will be displayed behind.

Mix It Up

When many people think of art, they think of paintings, but plenty of other options are available. Consider photography, sculptures, tapestries and even mixed-media pieces such as tile art installations. These options add variety and can be used to create a layered look in your focal point.

Placement

When hanging artwork, consider how high it will hang, whether on a blank wall or above a piece of furniture. Typically, the center of a piece should hang at eye level, which is 55 to 60 inches from the floor. The lowest art should hang is 12 inches from the top of the furniture.
